Awards
Outstanding Citizen
The Missouri Bar and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education have co-sponsored the Outstanding Citizens Awards Luncheon for fifteen public high school seniors throughout Missouri since 1993 when the Excellence in Education Act established this award. The Missouri Bar sponsors the luncheon and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds for each of the winners. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education distributes and processes the applications and oversees the selection process. The recipients of the award must have demonstrated academic competence in government and civics courses, have exceptional participation in civics/government-related extracurricular activities and have performed exemplary community service. The awards luncheon is held in the spring, usually at the Governor’s Mansion and in conjunction with the meeting dates of the State Board of Education.
E.A. Richter Award for Excellence in Citizenship Education
The E.A. Richter Award is an annual award given during the bar’s Annual Law Day Conference. It is named after E.A. (Wally) Richter, who pioneered law-related education in Missouri. The Advisory Committee on Citizenship Education established this award to acknowledge outstanding contributions by Missouri’s public, private and parochial teachers, administrators or schools to citizenship education in Missouri.
The Warren Solomon Civic Virtue Award
Established in 2001 by the bar’s advisory Committee on Citizenship Education, the Solomon Civic Virtue Award recognizes individuals who exemplify civic virtue and promote civic virtue among students and teacher alike. Recipients of this award must not only set aside their own interests in favor of promoting the common good of all people, but must exceed all other in Missouri when acting in such a manner. This award is given at the bar’s Annual Law Day Conference. It is named for Warren Solomon, Ph.D., formerly a social studies consultant for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
