The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a full-time United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Missouri at Jefferson City. The duties of the position include but are not limited to: (1) conduct of most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; (2) trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases; (3) conduct of various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from a District Judge; and (4) trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic authority of a United States Magistrate Judge is specified in 28 U.S.C. § 636. To be qualified for appointment an applicant must: (1) Be, and have been for at least five years, a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Territory of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Virgin Islands of the United States, and have been engaged in the active practice of law for a period of at least five years (with some substitutes authorized); (2) Be competent to perform all the duties of the office; be of good moral character; be committed to equal justice under the law; be patient and courteous; and be capable of deliberation and decisiveness; (3) Be less than seventy years old; and (4) Not be related to a judge of the District Court. A merit selection panel composed of attorneys and other members of the community will review all applicants and make recommendations to the District Judges. The Court will make the appointment following an FBI full-field investigation and an IRS tax check of the applicant selected by the Court. Due consideration will be given to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, age (40 and over), gender, religion, national origin, or disability. The current annual salary of a full-time magistrate is $160,080. The term of office is eight years. The Director of Claims Management and Litigation Counsel supports and assists the Senior Director's efforts to develop and implement a pro-active claims management program designed to achieve cost savings for the Ascension Health self-insurance programs, including the self-insurance Trusts, Mission Program, on-shore operations related to both the wholly-owned and jointly sponsored Captive insurance companies, and commercially insured programs for which claims are managed by Ascension Health Risk Management.
This associate will maintain procedures that ensure timely setting of adequate claim reserves; implement and maintain a program that promotes early identification and reporting of incidents involving serious injury and/or probable liability, prompt investigation, and pro-active intervention to resolve probable liability events; review and assess the performance of Health Ministries and defense counsel in order to ensure compliance with the pro-active claim management program and minimize costs to the program and maintain a database system for tracking and trending losses, reserves, payments and limit erosions.
The Director will also work with Insurance Operations to confirm coverage for self-insured events and to ensure that excess or third party coverage is triggered to provide for the maximum coverage of an event under the insurance programs; manage settlement authority and trial authority for self-insured claims and supervise the management of claims reserved at $250,000 or greater, and claims involving serious injury (i.e., significant injury events).
Other accountabilities of the Director of Claims Management & Litigation Counsel include: assistance with preparing meeting agendas and materials and participation in the Claims Committee meetings; pursuance of continuing education and professional organization memberships to advance knowledge of healthcare and claims management and serving on committees or task forces as assigned.
In consultation with the Senior Director this position supervises, trains, and supports the activities of designated Claims staff, including: hiring and dismissal, determining training and education requirements, evaluating performance and providing timely feedback and supports the Senior Director in managing the day-to-day insurance activities of the Claims Team. This Director will work closely with the Senior Director to develop ensure the Team meets its budget, goals and objectives and will ensure invoices are coded correctly to appropriate entity.
